(Adnkronos) – The European Union must “move forward” with managing migration and on defence policy, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani told reporters on Thursday on the sidelines of a European Peoples’ Party pre-summit in Brussels.
“Today, we need to have a united Europe, because Europe’s strength lies in its unity. When European countries each go their own way, the EU does not work,” Tajani said.
The 27-member EU also “needs reforms”, Tajani said.
Tajani noted that his conservative Forza Italia party has proposed the direct election of a joint president of the European Commission and the European Council – respectively the bloc’s executive and decision-making bodies.
Forza Italia also wants to reform the European Green Deal, which set the EU on a path to a green transition aimed at reaching climate neutrality by 2050. The EU is however trying to contain a political backlash against its ambitious environmental policies and to slim down regulation for struggling industries
“We want to do this to strengthen Europe,” Tajani stated.
