Mideast: Italy urges direct US-Iran dialogue

25 Giugno 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy will do its utmost to mediate in direct dialogue between the United States and Iran to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East and reassure Israel, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday.

“I believe that the best solution is direct US-Iran dialogue, so that Israel also feels guaranteed by the American position,” Tajani told reporters on the sidelines of a Nato summit at The Hague.

“We are willing to do everything necessary to mediate,” he said.

US president Donald Trump on Monday announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, ending 12-days of warfare between the two regional foes.

The ceasefire came after the US struck three key Iranian nuclear facilities on Saturday. Iran launched a retaliatory missile attack on the Al Udeid airbase in Qatar – the largest US military base in the Middle East. There were no injuries reported.

Iran also launched missiles on Monday at the Ain al-Assad airbse in western Iraq, which houses US troops, the Associated Press news agency cited an Iraqi security official as saying. There were no immediate reports on casualties or damage, AP said, quoting an official.
