(Adnkronos) – A United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Rome made an emergency landing in Iceland Sunday morning due to a mechanical problem that occurred while flying over the Atlantic Ocean. Flight UA507, a Boeing 777-200ER with registration N76010, declared an emergency about eight hours into the flight, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The plane had departed from San Francisco International Airport at 5:03 p.m. local time on Saturday and was en route to Europe when it suddenly descended to 21,000 feet (6,300 meters) and transmitted the 7700 distress signal, with international code. The flight was diverted and landed safely at Keflavik International Airport, near Reykjavík, around 8 a.m. local time on Sunday.

After landing, the plane left the runway and was towed to a remote airport stand. None of the 275 passengers or 14 crew members were injured, United Airlines said.
