(Adnkronos) – As US president Donald Trump said a ceasefire was in place between Israel and Iran after 12 days of strikes on each other’s territory, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Tuesday: “We are trying to have an open dialogue with Iran, even knowing that it may have the atomic bomb.”
Italy “is doing everything possible to try to achieve a de-escalation,” Tajani told the Il Mattino Cinque TV programme, recalling that he had again “offered Rome as a meeting place”.
“We will now see what happens,” he added after the news of the ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
US-Iran nuclear talks were interrupted by the start of Israel’s military campaign against Iran on 13 June. Amid spiralling tensions, Trump ordered military strikes on Iran’s three main nuclear sites on Saturday, prompting Iran to carry out a retaliatory missile strike at the US al-Udeid Airbase in Qatar on Monday. Iran also launched a fresh barrage of missiles at Israel as the ceasefire deadline announced by Trump neared.
