(Adnkronos) – Italy’s embassy in Tehran will stay open “for now” with reduced staff as the government seeks to help “the largest possible number of Italians” to leave the Islamic Republic foreign minister Antonio Tajani said Tuesday as the US announced a ceasefire in a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran.
“We have tried to have as many Italians as possible leave Tehran and have also cut the number of staff left at the embassy, which for now remains open,” Tajani told the Mattino Cinque programme.
“We will then assess what to do next as the situation evolves,” Tajani said.
The government has so far helped scores of Italians to reach neighbouring countries from Iran in recent days, including an 18-month-old baby, according to a foreign ministry statement.
Rome is also helping Italian citizens to leave Israel and 122 arrived in Egypt on Sunday, where they were due to take a chartered flight to Italy’s northern city of Verona, according to the foreign ministry.
