Iran: Iranians will decide future govt – Italy

24 Giugno 2025

(Adnkronos) – The citizens of Iran will choose their future government but the first priority is to de-escalate hostilities with Israel, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said Tuesday as US president Donald Trump announced a ceasefire in a 12-day military conflict between the two regional foes.

“It will be up to the Iranians to decide their future, but for now we are talking to the (hardline Islamist) government they have,” Tajani told the Mattino Cinque programme.

Italy’s primary objective “is to safeguard our fellow citizens who are still in Iran, in the region, but also to work for a de-escalation.”

“We need to be very pragmatic. When there is a ceasefire, we need to reach peace,” Tajani said.

Tajani said Trump’s ceasefire announcement was “positive news”.

“I hope it (the ceasefire) will be respected,” he said.
