(Adnkronos) – The imam who led Friday prayers in Ahvaz, a city in western Iran, wore a military uniform and had a submachine gun slung over his shoulder. Local media reported this, highlighting how the cleric’s gesture – not a new one by the authorities of the Islamic Republic – is a sign of defiance towards Israel. In the same Ahvaz mosque, many of the faithful wore burial shrouds to indicate their willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice. Last October 4, a week after the killing in Beirut of Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also led prayers in Tehran with a rifle next to him.
