(Adnkronos) – MEPs “express deep concern about arbitrary detentions in Georgia and about government harassment and violence against journalists” following the passage of a resolution in the European Parliament. Among their requests is the immediate and unconditional release of Georgian journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, arrested for political reasons according to the European Parliament.

The European Parliament “strongly condemns the systematic attack by the Georgian Dream regime (the ruling party in Tbilisi which the European Parliament does not recognize, ed) against democratic institutions, the political opposition, independent media, civil society and the independence of the judiciary”, calls for “independent investigations” and urges the authorities “to act immediately to guarantee the safety of journalists”. The request for the release of all political prisoners, including activists, opposition leaders and former president Mikheil Saakashvili, together with the repeal of repressive laws, the restoration of democracy and the full protection of media freedom and civil liberties, is also reiterated.

The resolution was adopted with 324 votes in favour, 25 against and 87 abstentions. On the Italian side, it was supported by the votes of the Democratic Party (S&D), Forza Italia (EPP) and the Avs MEP Ilaria Salis, while the MEPs of the 5 Star Movement (The Left), Brothers of Italy (ECR) and Lega (Patriots) opted for abstention.
