(Adnkronos) – With a ruling approved by the judges of the conservative majority, the United States Supreme Court has upheld Tennessee’s law banning gender-affirming therapies for transgender minors, in a decision destined to be interpreted as a political victory for the Trump administration line. The ruling, which was opposed by the three liberal minority judges, will have implications for the other 23 states that have adopted laws similar to Tennessee’s.
It states that the judges decided not to block the law so as not to question the positions taken by local politicians regarding the scientific debate regarding the safety of medical therapies in a still evolving field. “The voices in this debate raise sincere concerns, the implications are all profound,” reads the ruling written by Chief Justice John Roberts.
“We leave these policy questions to the people, their local representatives, and the democratic process,” he then adds. In explaining the dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor said that Tennessee’s law bans life-saving therapies and clearly discriminates on the basis of sex. “By withdrawing from meaningful judicial review, the Court has abandoned transgender children and their families to political whims,” she wrote.
