(Adnkronos) – “Faced with one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world, the European Commission will provide 161 million euros in humanitarian aid to support the most vulnerable Afghans in the country and the surrounding region.” The EU executive announced this in a statement, specifying that over 141 million will be allocated to humanitarian organizations operating within Afghanistan, while two tranches of 10 million will go to meet the needs of Afghan citizens and refugees in Pakistan and Iran.
The new EU funding will include food assistance, health services and treatment for malnutrition, as well as improved access to drinking water and sanitation in remote areas, the statement explains. Measures to protect vulnerable groups will also be strengthened, including legal assistance and protection of the rights of people at risk, and education services in emergency situations, with particular attention to access for girls, as well as disaster preparedness measures.
As part of this support, a new EU Humanitarian Air Bridge flight is scheduled for today, June 17, with almost 100 tons of essential humanitarian supplies. Since the launch of this air bridge in 2021, 40 flights have been organized, transporting around 2,150 tons of aid to the country, the EU executive specifies, highlighting that the material is distributed “exclusively through humanitarian partners active in the field”.
