(Adnkronos) – Tomorrow, tanks, troops, and military bands will parade through the streets of Washington, in front of a Donald Trump happy to finally have the military parade he has dreamed of for years to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the military army, an anniversary that falls right on the day of his 79th birthday. All while in thousands of cities and towns across America there will be “No Kings” demonstrations and rallies, no king to denounce, say the organizers, the president’s authoritarian tactics and his contempt for the Constitution.
It will therefore be possible to have a clear picture of the deep and dramatic division that the country has been experiencing since Trump’s return to the White House, writes the Washington Post, underlining how this division has been made even more evident and strong by the events in Los Angeles, with a part of the country praising the president for his iron fist against migrants and protests and another that sees the raids and the militarized response to the protests as a sign of a worrying authoritarian drift.
A concern exacerbated by the fact that Trump wanted this military parade at all costs – which he had also tried to have during his first term, encountering the resistance of a Pentagon then much more independent than the current one – which, certainly not by coincidence, falls right on his birthday, another move smelling of authoritarianism
