(Adnkronos) – Not just Los Angeles. A demonstration against the federal agency ICE in Lower Manhattan, in the heart of New York, degenerated overnight into violent clashes between protesters and police, with over 80 arrests and chaotic scenes on the streets of the center. As reported by the New York Post, thousands of people gathered in Foley Square to protest against the deportations taking place in the city, shouting “Abolish ICE” and “Kick ICE out of New York”. After hours of peaceful protest, at sunset, riots broke out, with objects being thrown at officers, police using pepper spray, and brutal arrests documented on video.
Among the participants were also institutional figures such as Brooklyn Councilwoman Shahana Hanif and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who harshly attacked Mayor Eric Adams for his alleged support of ICE operations. “The mayor is collaborating with Trump to militarize our streets,” said Hanif. Williams instead accused the NYPD of allowing “ICE to kidnap people in the city.” The Manhattan protest is part of a national wave of mobilizations against the federal agency, with similar demonstrations also detected in San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago, in addition to the well-known prolonged unrest in Los Angeles.
