(Adnkronos) – It’s not just a personal divorce, the end of the bromance that was instrumental, as Elon Musk acrimoniously claims, to Donald Trump’s return to the White House, but also a reversal on what was the ideological cornerstone of the billionaire’s participation in the government, the dismissal of thousands of federal employees. For some time now, in fact, the Trump administration has been rehiring people who had been forced or encouraged to resign from the relentless offensive launched, with letters and ultimatums, in recent months by the Doge, the office for government efficiency that until last week was headed by the richest man in the world.
Even before Musk’s departure from the administration and the sensational public clash between the two former best friends of yesterday, the Trump administration is backtracking by recalling experienced officials whose departure puts crucial sectors of public management at risk, from the IRS to the State Department and the Food and Drug Administration.
“They wanted to show that they were cutting the government, but there was no reflection on what to keep,” a Food and Drug Administration employee who was fired and then rehired told the Washington Post. “Now it seems like it was all a game to them,” she adds.
The administration is trying to recall not only the fired people – in whose favor federal judges had also ruled – but also those who had accepted the voluntary resignation proposal.
The fact is that some of these, especially those close to retirement or those who have already found a new job in the private sector, appear unenthusiastic about the idea of returning to their old jobs. So, in some departments, they are looking for ways to fill the gaps left in the workforce, asking the remaining employees to work overtime or replace colleagues who have left.
