Italy-France: Meloni, Macro talks ‘positive’ strengthen Europe – Tajani

4 Giugno 2025

(Adnkronos) – Talks between Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni and France’s president Emanuel Macron in Rome following tensions on Ukraine, trade and US relations are “a positive sign”, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday.

“It seems to me that things are going in the right direction, it is a positive sign that also strengthens the role of Europe,” Tajani stated.

Tajani was speaking on the sidelines of a Unesco summit ‘Cultural Heritage in the 21st Century’ which kicks off on Wednesday at the medieval Castel Capuano in Naples.

“There is shared vision on many issues: growth, industrial, automobile and nuclear policies, Ukraine’s defence,” Tajani continued.

“France and Italy are two countries that are part of Europe and which both belong to the G7,” he underlined.

“Therefore the more we cooperate the better. I believe this sends a message for a more credible, more united Europe, at a time when it has to grapple with the issues of tariffs, of security, with two wars on its doorstep – one in the Middle East and one in Ukraine”, Tajani concluded.

Meloni and Macron vowed to work together for a “more sovereign, stronger and more prosperous Europe, oriented towards peace, capable of defending its interests and of protecting its citizens,” according to a joint statement issued after their three-hour summit on Tuesday.
