(Adnkronos) – Geert Wilders, leader of the Dutch far-right, has announced the withdrawal of his party, the Pvv (Party for Freedom), from the government coalition, provoking a political crisis that could lead to early elections in the Netherlands. At the heart of the break is a deep disagreement with allies on migration policy, one of the central themes of Wilders’ program.
“There was no signature on our asylum plan… The Pvv is leaving the coalition,” the leader wrote on X, complaining about delays in implementing the “toughest immigration policy ever seen in the Netherlands,” promised by the coalition after the Pvv’s surprise victory in the November 2023 elections. The party’s withdrawal now opens a phase of political uncertainty in the European Union’s fifth-largest economy.
