Ukraine: Kuleba, ‘turning point is far off, only America can impose it’

(Adnkronos) – “I don’t want to disappoint anyone: in diplomacy, contacts, the exchange of documents, phone calls are very important. But what really matters is that the parties have the motivation to stop the war. And if I look around, I don’t see any motivation from Putin to end the massacres.” This was stated by the former Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, in an interview with La Repubblica.

“I don’t expect a ceasefire anytime soon. What really matters is understanding whether Putin feels the pressure to stop the war, and at the moment he doesn’t. Everything can change if President Trump sends a very clear message that he is ready to act and impose a ceasefire,” he adds, convinced that it is “difficult to trust this administration” even though “we have to work with them”.

“Trump and Putin think the same way about how the world should be organized, but that doesn’t mean Trump can’t go against Putin,” he says. “The question is if and when he will. I believe he will when the inability to change the Russian president’s behavior is seen as his weakness.” Kuleba recalls that “in the last week we have experienced three terrible nights” and that “then one morning Trump called President Putin ‘crazy’ and we witnessed a miracle, for two consecutive evenings Kyiv was not attacked”. “This tells us,” he concludes, “that the bombs can be stopped, but it can only happen if the United States takes a clear stand against Russia”.
