Tajani ‘convinced’ that EU, US will get a deal on tariffs

(Adnkronos) – United States president Donald Trump will make a deal on tariffs with the European Union “in the end” as he did with key trade partners Canada, Mexico and China, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday.

“I am convinced that in the end, as happened with Canada, with Mexico, with China, an accord will be reached,” Tajani told a panel discussion in Rome on the future of Europe.

“All we need to do is to keep a cool head – a virtue of the strong….we need to know how to wait, because then the storm passes and agreements are found.”

In EU-US negotiations ahead of a looming 9 July deadline for the 50% tariffs which Trump has threatened to slap on European good, “we must keep our eyes open, remain alert and safeguard our interests,” Tajani said.

“We must be determined and recall there is a great opportunity for Europe which we must not foresake,” Tajani continued.

“Obviously, it is in the US’s interests to negotiate with individual countries, while it is the exact opposite for Europe,” he said.”

“Each of us is stronger if we are part of a reality that is bigger than each of one of us,” Tajani concluded.
