Italy to push for end to death penalty worldwide

29 Maggio 2025

(Adnkronos) – During its upcoming three-year membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council from next year, Italy will keep striving to end capital punishment in all countries, the embassy in Afghanistan wrote Thursday on X.

“A universal moratorium on the #deathpenalty until its complete abolition is a priority that Italy will continue to pursue at the UN #HumanRights Council,” read the post.

“This includes through outreach initiatives with civil society organisations and partner countries,” the post added.

Italy will serve on the 47-member UN Human Rights Council from 2026-2028, the foreign ministry announced on X on 8 May.

Western European countries have seven seats on the UN’s Geneva-based watchdog and members are not eligible for re-election after serving two consecutive terms.
