Romania, pro-Russian Georgescu announces retirement from political life

27 Maggio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Calin Georgescu has announced his retirement from political life, a few months after winning the Romanian presidential elections last November, in a round that was however annulled due to Russian interference. Excluded from the repeat vote held on May 18, the pro-Russian independent Georgescu communicated his decision in a message broadcast by “Realitatea”, declaring that “the presidential elections in Romania are over” and that his choice is “personal”, without any judgment towards those who will continue to “support and defend the cause”.

“From now on I will be an observer of the social situation of the country”, he said, adding that he will return to politics only when “there will be a real opportunity for Romania”. The former candidate launched an appeal for calm, denouncing the climate of conflict and the “depoliticization” of public debate: “The country has become impoverished while attention is focused on disputes irrelevant to the well-being of society”.

In the May 18 round, it was finally the pro-European candidate Nicusor Dan who won the presidency, overturning the results of the first round which had seen the ultra-conservative leader of Aur, George Simion, in the lead.
