(Adnkronos) – A total 15 trucks funded by the ‘Food for Gaza’ scheme have now entered the coastal enclave since Israel last week caved into pressure from allies in the US and said it would allow a “basic” amount of food in to avert a famine, according to a foreign ministry statement.
The first nine sample trucks entered Gaza on Sunday and the remaining 6 arrived on the Palestinian side of the Israeli Kerem Shalom crossing on Tuesday, the statement said.
The trucks have been modified to be able to act as ‘forklifts’ inside the Gaza Strip and distribute flour and other food aid at the various distribution points managed or recognised by the United Nations World Food Programme, said the statement.
Italy donated the 15 trucks to WFP,which will decide how they will be used, based on the situation and risk assessment in Gaza, ensuring the safety and security of personnel on the ground, the statement added.
Italy is coordinating the ‘Food for Gaza’ programme, which it launched last year with WFP, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, the Red Cross and Red Crescent and Italy’s civil protection agency.
