Brazil, Bolsonaro’s son investigated, tried to obtain US sanctions against judges

27 Maggio 2025

(Adnkronos) – The Brazilian Supreme Court has ordered an investigation into the son of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro for trying to obtain US sanctions against Brazilian judges. Eduardo Bolsonaro moved to Washington in February where he launched a campaign in favor of his father, a close ally of Donald Trump, accused of plotting a coup against the institutions in 2023 to prevent the inauguration of Luiz Inacio Lula, who had defeated him in the elections.

Attorney General Paulo Gonet asked the Supreme Court to authorize an investigation into Bolsonaro Jr.’s “threats” against judges, prosecutors and police officials involved in the investigation into his father, also accusing him of lobbying in Washington to obtain sanctions, such as visa blocking and asset freezes, by the US.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes then accepted Gonet’s request, ordering the notice of investigation for obstruction of justice and intimidation, also ordering that the former president be questioned by the police about it. The move comes after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last week that Washington could impose sanctions on Judge Moraes, who is at the center of a clash with another Trump ally, Elon Musk. Bolsonaro Jr. immediately rejoiced at these statements, writing “we will win” on social media.
