Serbia, Belgrade extends agreement with Gazprom to September at heavily discounted prices

26 Maggio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Serbia has extended its contract with Gazprom for the supply of 6.1 million cubic meters of gas per day for another four months, until the end of September. The news was released while Belgrade continues to negotiate with the Russian giant for a long-term agreement, to replace the three-year agreement expiring on the 31st of this month. In his meeting with Serbian President Aleksandr Vucic at the Kremlin on May 9, Vladimir Putin pledged to continue supporting Serbia’s energy security.

The cost of Russian gas will be 290 euros per thousand cubic meters during these four months, announced the CEO of Srbijagas, Dusan Bajatovic, below the European average of 360. The cost was 275 euros in the contract ending at the end of the month, for 2.2 billion cubic meters. Belgrade is asking for a new ten-year contract for 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which risks creating political risks on Serbia’s path to joining the European Union, which instead plans to cease all gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027. Serbia has not introduced sanctions against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine by Moscow’s forces in February 2022.
