(Adnkronos) – The General Affairs Council tomorrow will hear Hungary as part of the procedure under Article 7 of the TEU, which could lead, in theory, to the suspension of Budapest’s voting rights in the Council, but no decision is expected on the matter. This was explained by a senior EU official in Brussels. “As far as I know, it is not a point subject to decisions,” he explains.
In tomorrow’s GAC, the ministers will hold the eighth hearing of Hungary under the procedure provided for in Article 7, initiated by the European Parliament with a reasoned proposal of September 2018, almost eight years ago.
The procedure has been ongoing since then and has not led to any decision, because to adopt sanctions against an EU member state that violates the rule of law, the unanimity of the other member states is required. If before Budapest could count on Warsaw, when it was governed by the PiS, today there are others, and more than one, governments that would be reluctant to adopt a similar measure against a member state.
