(Adnkronos) – In a large-scale operation, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Criminal Police Office of Germany have arrested five people suspected of having conducted and planned attacks against asylum seekers. According to Spiegel information, they are accused of being members or supporters of the far-right group “Letzte Verteidigungswelle’ (Last Wave of Defense), considered by the intelligence services to be a terrorist organization.
The suspects belong to “a far-right terrorist organization founded no later than mid-April 2024 (…) whose aim is to cause the collapse of the democratic system in the Federal Republic of Germany through acts of violence that primarily target migrants and political opponents,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement, stressing that “the members of this organization consider themselves the last resort in defense of the” ‘German nation'”.
Agents arrested suspects between the ages of 14 and 18 in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Hesse. Three others, from Saxony and Thuringia, aged between 18 and 21, were already in custody.
“Last Wave of Defense” is a group of young neo-Nazis active in several federal states of Germany, Spiegel reports. Since last year, it has recruited followers through social media such as Instagram, TikTok and Telegram. Other similar groups have names like “Jung und Stark”, “Der Störtrupp” and “Deutsche Jugend Voran”, reads the Hamburg weekly.
Several attacks have already been perpetrated by members of the “Last Wave of Defense”, for example in October 2024 at the Kultberg in Altdöbern, Brandenburg. The building was almost completely destroyed by arson, with material damage amounting to hundreds of thousands of euros. Two fifteen-year-olds had already been arrested in February, but were later released.
