Iran: Nuclear issue must be solved through dialogue says Italy

20 Maggio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy fully backs the UN International Atomic Energy Agency, is ready to host a fifth round of talks between the United States and Iran on its uranium enrichment program, and believes the issue can only be solved through negotiation, foreign minister Antonio Tajani stated on Tuesday.

“I had a telephone conversation with @rafaelmgrossi for an update on the nuclear negotiations,” Tajani wrote on X, referring to IAEA chief Rafel Grossi. “We are following developments in the US-Iran talks with great attention and we are convinced that the Iranian nuclear issue must be resolved through dialogue,” Tajani underlined. “I confirmed Italy’s full support for the activities of the @iaeaorg and our willingness to host future talks in Rome,” Tajani continued. Tajani and Grossi also discussed the situation in war-ravaged Ukraine and the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – Europe’s largest – according to Tajani’s post. “We continue to support the importance of the involvement of the UN, also in forging an agreement on the #Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant,” Tajani added. The vast Zaporizhzhia plant’s future is a key aspect of any negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Seized by Russia spring 2022 after its full-scale military invasion of the former Soviet republic in February that year and shut down for safety reasons a few months later, the nuclear reactor remains on the frontline of the conflict, close to the Dnipro River in the southeast.
