Romania, Duda hosts Simion in Warsaw, Tusk ‘so Russia celebrates’

14 Maggio 2025

(Adnkronos) – The outgoing president of Poland, Andrzej Duda, hosted George Simion, the far-right candidate in the Romanian presidential elections, in Warsaw, provoking strong reactions in the context of delicate electoral rounds for both countries. Simion, known for his affinity with US President Donald Trump, will challenge the centrist and pro-European candidate Nicusor Dan in the runoff in Romania on Sunday, the same day that Poles will go to the polls for the first round of the presidential elections.

During the meeting at the presidential palace, Duda and Simion – also accompanied by former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki – discussed bilateral relations, according to the Polish Head of State’s Office. Yesterday, Simion participated in a rally with Karol Nawrocki, historian and presidential candidate supported by Duda and the nationalist Pis party. The two launched a joint appeal against the centralization of the European Union and against illegal immigration, promising a “Europe of homelands”.

The public appearance of Simion and Nawrocki, however, aroused the indignation of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who accused the two exponents of indirectly favoring Russia. “Russia celebrates,” Tusk wrote on X, underlining that the joint presence of Nawrocki and the “pro-Russian” Simion a few days before the elections makes “everything clear” on the front of the political alliances at stake.
