Libya, Unsmil calls for ‘immediate ceasefire’ after second night of escalation in Tripoli

14 Maggio 2025

(Adnkronos) – The United Nations mission in Libya has called for a ceasefire after the “second consecutive night” of escalating tensions in Tripoli. Unsmil expressed “deep concern” over the “escalation of violence in densely populated neighborhoods of Tripoli for the second consecutive night, which puts the lives of countless civilians at risk”.

Yesterday, a death toll of at least six was confirmed, with news of the killing of the powerful Abdelghani al-Kikli. Unsmil called for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire in all inhabited areas” because the continuation of hostilities “will only worsen the situation of instability in the capital and in Libya in general”. In a note released via X, the Mission urged “all parties” to immediately start “a serious dialogue” to “resolve differences peacefully”.

Confirmed “full support for all efforts for de-escalation” and willingness to mediate to “help end the fighting and facilitate dialogue to protect the stability and the lives and property of Libyans”.
