(Adnkronos) – The party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Fidesz, has presented a bill in parliament that, following the Russian model, targets non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that receive funding from abroad.
The measure provides that NGOs deemed capable of influencing public opinion be placed on a blacklist. Once noted on the list, these organizations will only be able to receive external support with the approval of the revenue agency, and will have to comply with the rules on combating money laundering. If an NGO obtains foreign funds by other means, it will have to pay a fine equal to 25 times the amount received; otherwise, it will be dissolved and banned. The bill will be voted on in the coming weeks to receive majority approval.
