(Adnkronos) – Violent clashes between rival armed groups took place overnight in Tripoli, Libya, where Abdelghani al-Kikli, leader of the powerful Support and Stability Apparatus militia, was killed. This was reported by the Libyan television channel Al-Ahrar and the Al-Wasat news website, explaining that the clashes were concentrated mainly south of the Libyan capital between armed groups from Tripoli and rival factions from Misurata.
The Libyan Interior Ministry has asked “all citizens to stay home for their safety”. Unsmil, the United Nations mission in Libya, has appealed for calm. “Unsmil is alarmed by the evolving security situation in Tripoli, with intense heavy weapons fighting in densely populated civilian areas,” it said on X. The appeal to “all parties is to cease fighting immediately”, warning that “attacks against civilians and civilian targets may constitute war crimes”.
