(Adnkronos) – Sussan Ley is the first woman to lead the Australian Liberal party in its over 80 years of history. Ley takes on the role of opposition leader, succeeding Peter Dutton, considered the main person responsible for the disastrous electoral result reported by the party in the May 3 vote. The elections marked the reconfirmation of Anthony Albanese as prime minister, with the Labor party achieving one of the best results in recent decades.
Born in Nigeria and raised in the United Arab Emirates by British parents, Ley moved to Australia as a teenager. In order to enter politics, she renounced her British citizenship, embarking on a career that saw her become a Member of Parliament in 2001. Since then, she has held prominent positions, including Minister of Health and the Environment, as well as being Peter Dutton’s deputy, from whom she now takes over the leadership of the Liberal party.
