(Adnkronos) – “This is a truly fantastic, historic day.” On the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, Keir Starmer celebrated the trade agreement reached with the United States. Speaking by phone during Donald Trump’s live broadcast from the Oval Office, the Labour leader praised the American negotiating team and called the agreement an “incredible springboard for the future” of transatlantic relations.
“The timing couldn’t be more fitting,” Starmer said, recalling that 80 years ago, at this very time of day, Winston Churchill announced victory against Nazi Germany. Then as now, he added, the United Kingdom and the United States are “closer allies than any other country,” especially in the areas of defense and intelligence sharing.
According to Starmer, the agreement reached marks a significant extension of this historic collaboration, now also including economic and trade policy. On the technological front, he stressed how the United States and the United Kingdom are the only nations in the world with technology sectors valued at over $1 trillion, a sign of their joint leadership in innovation. “Our alliance has deep roots in history, but looks to the future. This agreement represents an extraordinary platform to face global challenges together,” he concluded.
