(Adnkronos) – Italy will serve on the 47-member Human Rights Council of the United Nations from 2026-2028, the foreign minister wrote Thursday on X (formerly Twitter).
“Italy at the UN #HumanRights Council for the biennium 2026-2028,” read the tweet.
“Italy remains firmly committed to the protection and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms, which has always been a priority of our foreign policy,” the tweet underlined.
Italy’s human rights priorities include ending capital punishment worldwide; women and girls’ rights, especially campaigning against female genital mutilation and early and forced marriages; protecting religious minorities and the right to freedom of religion and belief, according to the foreign ministry.
Italy was previously a member of the UN Human Rights Council from 2008-2010, from 2012-2014 and from 2019-2021.
Western European countries have seven seats on the UN watchdog and members are not eligible for re-election after serving two consecutive terms.
