Germany: migrants, reinforced border controls, checkpoints restored

8 Maggio 2025

(Adnkronos) – German police have intensified controls at the country’s borders, in line with the new measures wanted by the Merz government on the fight against irregular immigration. A spokesman for the Bavarian federal police said that more checks are being carried out at the borders with Austria and the Czech Republic.

“We are ensuring that the inconvenience is minimal,” the spokesman told Dpa. “But we are carrying out more checks and this will be evident to travelers”. The police are also reopening checkpoints on smaller roads, such as the one on the Saalach river between Salzburg, Austria, and the German town of Freilassing.

The measures come two days after the inauguration of the Merz conservative government, which had pledged to maintain the temporary border controls imposed by previous administrations and to turn back irregular migrants at the border, even if they are asylum seekers. Additional checks have also been announced for the borders with Holland and Belgium.
