(Adnkronos) – The leader of the Romanian far-right party George Simion won the first round of the presidential elections held yesterday in Romania with 40.5 percent of the preferences. In second place is the mayor of Bucharest, the pro-European Nicusor Dan, with 20.9% of the votes. In third place is the candidate of the ruling coalition, Crin Antonescu, who admitted defeat and spoke of an “irreversible result” of the vote.
Simion and Dan will therefore compete in the runoff on May 18, almost six months after the results of the presidential elections were annulled due to “Russian interference”. According to Romanian polls, Simion is favored in the electoral battle against Dan in the runoff.
