(Adnkronos) – Former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo aspires to the presidency of South Korea. Han has announced that he will run in the elections scheduled for June 3 to choose the successor of Yoon Suk Yeol, dismissed after attempting to impose martial law in the country on December 3 of last year.
Until his resignation yesterday, the 75-year-old conservative Han served as interim president and prime minister. In the past he was ambassador to the United States. Han, reports the South Korean agency Yonhap, has promised South Koreans constitutional amendments so that “the president and the National Assembly share power”.
Today, the South Korean Constitution provides for a single five-year term for the presidency. Three are foreseen in Han’s proposal. Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, the opposition political force that controls the majority in the National Assembly, remains the favorite in the run-up to the vote.
