(Adnkronos) – Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has confirmed the classification of the Afd as a right-wing extremist party. The domestic intelligence service announced that the suspicion that the party is pursuing efforts directed against the free democratic order has become certainty in key areas.
Until now, the AfD at the federal level had been classified as a ‘suspected case’ of right-wing extremism. Now the Office for the Protection of the Constitution takes a further step forward. Due to the “extremist character of the party as a whole and which ignores respect for human dignity”, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution has now confirmed its classification as a right-wing extremist party.
“The prevailing conception of the party regarding people, based on ethnicity and origin, is incompatible with the fundamental order of a free democracy,” said the agency, specifying – as underlined by vice presidents Sinan Selen and Silke Willems – that the statements and positions of the party and the main representatives of the AfD violate the constitutional principle of the inviolability of human dignity. So far, only the regional branches of the party in Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt had been classified as extremist.
