(Adnkronos) – The death toll from a fire that broke out in a hotel in central Calcutta, India, is at least 15 dead and 13 injured. This was reported by the Indian newspaper The Telegraph, based on information released by local authorities and the Police. At the time of the tragedy, there were at least 88 people in the hotel. Among the victims, it is reported, are a woman and two children.
“The fire broke out around 8:15 pm local time yesterday on the premises of the Rituraj Hotel” and “several people were rescued by rescuers,” Calcutta Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma told reporters, quoted by the Ani agency. It is not yet clear what triggered the flames.
“Saddened by the loss of life,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote in a post on X, offering condolences to the relatives of the victims, wishing the injured a speedy recovery, and promising compensation to those affected by the tragedy.
