(Adnkronos) – The Hungarian Parliament has approved the proposal of Viktor Orban’s government to initiate the country’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), a decision announced in early April during the visit to Budapest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, currently the subject of an international arrest warrant.
Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó justified the choice by calling the ICC “a politicized institution” that had lost impartiality and credibility. The decision, which will not have immediate effect – the withdrawal will become official only one year after the formal notification – does not, however, release Hungary from the obligations assumed during its accession to the Rome Statute, the legal basis of the Court.
