Pope, tension in Buenos Aires, vice president challenged at suffrage mass, ‘Nazi’

22 Aprile 2025

(Adnkronos) – Argentine Vice President Victoria Villarruel was greeted with whistles and insults as she left the Basilica of San José de Flores in Buenos Aires, where a Mass in suffrage of Pope Francis, celebrated by Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva in the symbolic place where the pontiff discovered his vocation, had just ended. Outside the church, dozens of people shouted slogans such as “kick her out” and “Nazi,” forcing Villarruel to leave the place under escort, in a climate of high tension, reports “La Nacion”.

Accused of revisionism on the crimes of the Argentine military dictatorship, the president of the Senate – not on good terms with Javier Milei despite their parties being in a governing coalition – had left the church to reach her car when threatening chants arose from the crowd: “As with the Nazis, we will come looking for you wherever you go”.
