(Adnkronos) – For Brazil, China currently offers “more opportunities” and “fewer commercial risks” than the United States. This was stated by Celso Amorim, the special advisor to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for foreign policy, underlining that the tariff war started by Donald Trump puts the principles of Brazilian foreign policy at risk.
“China now has resources available to invest abroad that the United States does not have, China now offers Brazil more opportunities and fewer risks,” said the former foreign minister in an interview published in ‘O Globo’, explaining that perhaps Washington’s claim is not only to impose duties indiscriminately, but also to “force” countries into bilateral negotiations at the expense of the multilateral system.
“This breakdown of multilateralism is expressly mentioned in the White House memo, which also praises agreements from the last century,” adds Armorin, recalling that the recession that began in the 1930s was precisely these policies that Washington now supports. “The collapse of the multilateral system brings with it far greater damage than any comparative advantage that one might have,” concluded Lula’s advisor, who does not rule out the possibility of an international recession, even if he finds a certain “different perception” in the United States after “the global storm” unleashed by Trump.
