(Adnkronos) – Incumbent center-right President Daniel Noboa has been re-elected president of Ecuador after winning the runoff election. Noboa, who called his victory “historic,” has been in office since November 2023. He has marked his presidency with a tough military crackdown on the country’s violent criminal gangs. His leftist challenger, Luisa González, said she did not accept the result and denounced fraud, without providing evidence.
According to data from Ecuador’s national electoral council, it is a decisive victory for Noboa, who won about 56% of the vote, after pre-election polls had indicated a head-to-head. “A victory with more than ten points ahead and more than a million votes, which leaves no doubt as to who the winner is,” Noboa said after the result was announced. “This result was achieved thanks to the perseverance, the struggle and the hard work of each member of this team,” he added.
