(Adnkronos) – The United States will withdraw troops and equipment from Jasionka, a military base in southeastern Poland, which has become a hub for the transfer of Western weapons to neighboring Ukraine. “After three years in Jasionka, this is an opportunity to right-size our presence,” said Christopher Donahue, the general in charge of the US Army’s command for Europe and Africa, stressing that the move will save “tens of millions of dollars,” Politico reports.
“The tasks previously performed by US forces in Jasionka will now be carried out by other allies,” said Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, assuring, in a post on X, that “US troops will remain in Poland but deployed in other locations.” “The mission in Jasionka will now be carried out primarily by Norwegian, German, British and Polish forces, along with other allied troops,” he adds, while the ministry therefore guarantees that the base’s hub operations will continue uninterrupted.
The US Army reiterated that the decision is part of “a planned effort to optimize operations while maintaining strong support for Ukraine and NATO.” The move, however, comes as fears grow among Europeans about the strength of the US commitment to European defense under President Donald Trump, who has threatened not to protect countries that do not invest enough in defense and is threatening the sovereignty of NATO members, such as Canada and Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
