Migrants, Germany no longer the main destination country for asylum seekers

7 Aprile 2025

(Adnkronos) – Germany is no longer – since February – the main destination country for asylum seekers in Europe, according to statistics from the Federal Department for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) published today in Nuremberg.

France, with 13,080 applications, and Spain, with 12,975, overtook Germany in February, which recorded 12,775 applications. In comparison, in the total for 2024, Germany was the country with the highest number of asylum applications, 250,615, far ahead of Spain, with 166,175, and Italy, with 158,605.

There is no international comparison available yet for March. In Germany, however, the number of asylum applications decreased, standing at 10,647, of which 8,983 were initial applications. This is a decrease of 19.7% compared to February and 45.3% compared to March 2024.

This decline is mainly due to a clear reduction in asylum applications from the top three countries of origin: Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey.
