(Adnkronos) – The Constitutional Court in South Korea has unanimously upheld the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol passed by the National Assembly last December following his attempt to introduce martial law. The ruling makes the exit of Yoon, until now only suspended from office, final and makes it possible to call early presidential elections within 60 days. The date must be announced within ten days. The ruling, which states that Yoon “violated the fundamental principles of the rule of law and democratic government”, was read live on television by the court’s president, Moon Hyung-bae.
“He was not satisfied with declaring martial law but committed acts that violated the Constitution and the law, mobilizing military and police forces to prevent the National Assembly from exercising its authority”.
