(Adnkronos) – The mystery of the ‘spheres’ that appeared on the beaches in eastern Australia in recent months seems almost solved. They had triggered the alarm and attracted the attention of the international media. Many beaches had been closed. Now it emerges that it could be debris carried from wastewater treatment plants. At least this emerges from what was communicated by the local authorities after the iconic Manly beach was also sealed off due to the appearance between October and January along the shore of “white-gray spherical debris”, often dark.
An investigation by the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA), where Sydney is located, to get to the bottom of what happened has concluded that the spheres are likely coming from Sydney Water treatment plants. The EPA has announced that scientific and technical investigations have identified similarities between the composition of the debris and samples taken from treatment plants. Experts continue to work to identify the source of the spheres and understand what caused the ‘incidents’. The tests revealed the presence in the debris of fatty acids, petroleum hydrocarbons, organic materials and inorganic compounds.
