(Adnkronos) – Eleven people have been arrested in Turkey as part of an investigation into the opposition’s call to boycott companies considered pro-government, with arrest warrants for a total of 16 people. Istanbul prosecutors launched the investigation on charges of spreading “hatred and discrimination” and “inciting public hostility”, including through social media. Anadolu Agency reported, stating that police are currently on the trail of the other 5 suspects, whom authorities accuse of using “divisive rhetoric” to “disrupt economic activity”.

Among those arrested is actor Cem Yigit Uzumoglu, protagonist of the Netflix series ‘Rise of Empires: Ottoman’, local media report. The crackdown comes amid a deepening political crisis, following the arrest and removal from office of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a key political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
