(Adnkronos) – United States Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that she has directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old Italian-American accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year in New York.
Mangione was indicted federally in December for stalking and murder, after shooting Thompson dead outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The New York State Attorney’s Office has also charged him with first-degree murder with terrorist intent. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Bondi explained that the decision to seek the death penalty is part of “President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and make America safe again.” “The murder of Brian Thompson – an innocent man and father of two – was a premeditated and cold-blooded execution that shocked America,” Bondi added.
