Myanmar, 7.7 magnitude earthquake, also felt in Thailand and China

(Adnkronos) – A very strong earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck central Myanmar today. This was announced by the US Geological Survey, which located the epicenter of the earthquake 16 kilometers northwest of the city of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 kilometers, at 2:20 pm local time, 7:20 am in Italy. The earthquake was also felt in Thailand, where offices and shops were evacuated in Bangkok and in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan following the strong shock. 

AFP journalists in Naypyidaw, the capital of the former Burma, saw damaged roads after the quake and pieces of cornices from buildings in the streets. Also felt strongly in Bangkok, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced the convening of an “emergency meeting” of the government. While in the Chinese province of Yunnan, the local seismological agency said it had recorded a magnitude 7.9 earthquake.
