(Adnkronos) – Italy’s foreign ministry is trying to locate 100 Italians in Myanmar and over 7000 in Thailand after the magnitude 7.7 earthquake on Friday whose epicentre was in central Myanmar and which is feared to have killed hundreds of people.
“After the earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand, the foreign ministry is actively following developments. It is in close contact with our embassies in the two countries and is verifying the possible involvement of Italian citizens,” said a statement.
At foreign minister Antonio Tajani’s request, the ministry’s crisis unit and overseas aid department are also working with Italy’s civil protection agency “to get a fuller picture of the situation and assess possible aid,” according to the statement.
At European level, the foreign ministry is looking at the possibility of joint action with European Civil Protection System, said the statement.
“Italy’s civil protection agency is in contact with the European Civil Protection Mechanism and a shared assessment of the situation and damage is being carried out,” the statement continued.
“At the moment, the information, especially for Myanmar, is very unclear,” the statement added.
