(Adnkronos) – A United Nations peacekeeping force in Ukraine involving be “crucial” and will result from a vote in the UN Security Council whose members include Russia and China, Italy said on Thursday.
“In Paris we can start considering the idea that the UN’s presence is crucial in Ukraine,” Tajani said after addressing the joint foreign affairs and defence committees of the upper and lower houses of parliament.
“This is also because the UN presence would be the result of a decision by the Security Council where Russia and China are also present,” Tajani
“If it has to do with guaranteeing a necessary ceasefire, a UN presence will be essential,” Tajani added.
Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni was on Thursday among 30 leaders attending the third summit on Ukraine’s safety, which is being held in Paris. France and Britain have called the summits a “coalition of the willing” amid concern in Europe that it can no longer count on the US as a bulwark of support for Ukraine in the three-year-old war triggered by Russia’s invasion.
“France will make the pursuit and reinforcement of military and financial support for Ukraine its top priority,” said the Elysee Palace in a statement ahead of the summit.
The possible establishment of a “reassurance force” – strongly backed by France and the UK – is a thorny issue among the 27-member EU, with Italy and Poland among countries opposing such a force.
